Michael Frakes is a clinical leader, educator, and author with over 30 years of experience in emergency and out-of-hospital care. As the Vice President for Clinical Care at Boston MedFlight, he oversees clinical care, education, and simulation for one of the busiest critical care transport programs in the Northeast United States. A Nebraska native, he began his career in EMS with an AAS in Emergency Medical Services from the Johnson County (KS) Community College and has a BS in Nursing from the Johns Hopkins University and an MS in Nursing from the University of Connecticut. Michael’s transport and medical experience includes positions as an EMT, Paramedic, Flight Communications Specialist, ED and ICU nurse, and transport nurse. He contributed as an author and co-editor to several recent textbooks, including the award-winning Patient Transport: Principles and Practice (6th edition), the companion book Patient Transport: Medical Critical Care, and Mechanical Ventilation in Critical Care Transport, and as an author in Penetrating Trauma: A Practical Guide, the Mass General Guide to Cardiovascular Critical Care. His non-clinical education includes a BA in Economics and Political Science from the University of Kansas and specialty education in quality and safety from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, American Society for Quality. and Johns Hopkins Medicine. He is certified as a Medical Transport Executive, a Nurse Executive, and a Barbeque Judge. Michael is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the College of Critical Care Medicine, the Academy of Air & Surface Transport Nursing, and the Academy of Emergency Nursing.
